Dresden. Where Opera never ends.

2013 Richard Wagner Bicentennial Festivities
Dresden to celebrate all year long

... and not half-heartedly either! Here is where the composer spent his childhood and youth, attended the Kreuzschule church school, became the director of the Royal Saxon Court Orchestra and led the Choral Society. Here he wrote some of his most important works and celebrated with triumphant premieres. And yet it was also in Dresden where Richard Wagner took part in the 1849 May Uprising and, like Gottfried Semper, was branded a wanted insurrectionist and ultimately forced to flee the city. Thus, in celebrating Wagner's 200th birthday, Dresden celebrates a man who changed the city's musical focus while drawing inspiration from the city itself.
